The Meadows Self-Directed Residency Winter 2024

Elise Campbell | January 15 - 21 Artist Talk January 20 | @FullofWoolCreations

Elise Campbell is a textile artist who works with wool, silk, and other natural fibres to create sculptural, felted art. She lives in Stillwater Lake, NS, and will be spending her week at The Meadows creating the initial storyboard for a new body of paper felt sculptures. Aiming to honour and pay tribute to life's many experiences, and as an act of healing, Elise will write personal stories on sheets of mulberry paper, which will later be felted with wool, cut, and sculpted to form. The process of felting, cutting and then sculpting through braiding/weaving/knotting makes the story illegible, while the finished form provides hints, or perhaps the shadow of her tale.

On Saturday, January 20th Elise will provide an artist talk that will touch on her journey to becoming a fibre artist, her process, and a little about the fascinating technique of wet felting. She will discuss her inspiration, her experiences in bringing soft sculptures to galleries and museums, and where she hopes her practice, and the work created at The Meadows, will take her.

Cydnee Sparrow | February 19-25, 2024 Artist Talk February 24 | @CydSparrow

Cydnee Sparrow is an artist born and raised in the prairies but is now based in Halifax/Kjipuktuk. They have a Fine Art Diploma from Red Deer Polytechnic and a BFA from NSCAD University. Their work is interdisciplinary but is primarily focused in painting and ceramics.

Operating with the acknowledgement of their own perspective as a queer settler in colonized western society their practice is interested in revealing/creating alternate margins for bodies to feel, form, cope, connect and question outside of idealized societal expectations. This is informed and supported by personal interactions with ambiguous elements of form, texture, landscape and movement found in the natural environments they are surrounded by. The work that results is visually presented as whimsical imaginings and/or tender gore.

During their time at the Meadows they will be exploring making flexible window-like panels using vinyl, linen and collected natural material. They are interested in using the landscape at the meadows to install and record some of these panels.

On Saturday February 24, Cydnee will talk about the work they are exploring at The Meadows residency and how it is a progression that connects past ongoing projects and interests. They will also talk about how observing form in nature and the external environment guides and their practice. Cydnee will also touch on working between and within different artistic disciplines and how that can be driven by concept as well as interests in process.

Artist Talk | February 24 from 1:30pm-3:30pm

On Saturday March 9, Christine, mixed media artist and illustrator, will be giving an artist talk on community building through artistic practice, and the tangential benefits of time invested into Artist Residencies. Having been fortunate enough to experience a variety of artist residencies in Canada, US and Colombia, Christine will talk about the different locations and experiences these opportunities facilitate. Sharing resources, space and energy creates opportunities and fosters collaborative ideas more varied than one could pull on their own. Following her art practice as it moves through cycles of materials and subject matter, arts organizations and community groups, following a thread as it weaves the fabric of a creative community.
